I think this is so oversimplified. I’m not a parent but observe that trying to manage parenting while both parents are having to also work full time is much more difficult than past systems where this often wasn’t the case. Plus there’s a huge increase in the expectations of parenting I think.

I only used to your independence, but now grandparents and cousins are A LOT OLDER, there goes your support network. My kids are in their early teens and my parents are in their 90s! When my kids were little, my folks would just get so tired so quickly. They had very little patience for the normal things that toddlers always do. That directly impacted “date night” and cascaded from there.

And I also feel like in the past the “villages” that existed for new parents do not necessarily exist for all people in all cultures now for a variety of reasons. Combined with COL being so high, both parents are likely working full time whether by choice or necessity, and all that comes with that. It depends on which eras we’re comparing, but the expectations are a lot of different…it’s very difficult on high-achieving new moms and all that’s expected of them…

I’m observing so many more factors than this. So much nuance and so many layers. My kids are 16 and 18 and it’s been the hardest, most amazing, humbling, joyful, scary, gift and honor of my life. And having babies now now would be so much scarier - the world is so much scarier. We (my husband and I) didn’t have smartphones or social media when they were born. Middle schoolers can now be trafficked and obtain fentanyl from a device in the palm of their hands. We practice fire drills, they practice active shooter drills. The socioeconomic and geopolitical instability is far more threatening than when I became a mom. We know such more about what little humans need developmentally, in terms of attachment, etc which is so great (know better, do better) and demands/expectations of parents can feel so much more impossible. Women have so many more opportunities (awesome)…and, there hasn’t been a significant shift for men or other supports to step up and share the work that has historically been managed by women. Women can do it all (yay!)….and women can do it all (yikes!), except no person can really do it all. “Villages” (grandparent and social support/ safety nets are far less robust). Most American families can’t survive on one income and many couples need more than just 2 incomes. There’s lots of research demonstrating benefits of becoming parents at older ages. Every generation has challenges and benefits…and becoming a parent today is incomparable to any other time in history. I don’t think the challenges can be reduced to an “identity crisis”. All of the systems within which we function are in crisis.
