Until recently, I always thought the captain did everything, I had i idea there was a pilot to do this. I also learned it’s because the pilot knows the channel in and out.

Very awesome, mostly unknown, career path. My son is currently a second mate on an ATB licensed for unlimited tonnage. Harbor pilot is a dream job for most mariners. Good luck to you sir. Well done.

You have to have a licensed Pilot to navigate local bodies of waters that the Captain of the large ships who enter areas of ports don’t have, such as the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia has to have a licensed Chesapeake Bay Pilot. My oldest son is a Pilot.
