Frequency separation is the art of placing certain elements within a particular frequency
⁣⁣Don't ignore the high end! So often I see producers who create music that either doesn't have enough high end or they've allowed other elements to bleed into the higher frequencies creating imbalance and muddiness in their mix. Are you struggling with frequency separation or wondering where to begin? Here are a few strategies that I implement in my own music to get a better sounding mix!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 1.) Frequency separation is the art of placing certain elements within a particular frequency "range" to allow other elements to shine through. There doesn't have to be a hard wall in between elements, such as the bass and the pads, but there should be thoughtful consideration when placing them. Allow the bass to have it's place in the high end and use some low pass filters on your pads to give the bass room to shine. Sequences can fall within the pad zone only if they have enough room to live there. It's considerations like these that you can make in the creative stage that will help out when mixing later!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 2.) Use native filters on the synthesizer before reaching for an EQ. You will get a better and more natural sounding result by using the filters of your synth rather than trying to fix it after the fact with an EQ. Most synthesizers these days have multiple filters on board so use both a high and a low pass filter on different oscillators to utilize the power of the synths in your arsenal. There's nothing wrong with sacrificing a bit of low end in your patch knowing that you will be able to place a bass or a bass pad in there and fill out those frequencies in your track. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ What are your favorite ways to get better high end in your music?
