My mom is now 86 and still refuses to eat some days so she won’t gain weight. She is barely 100 lbs.

My mom made a comment in passing when I was in the fourth grade about my belly. That comment never left my brain. I now have 3 daughters and I spend every day trying to show them to love their body because it's the only one they get. We spend a lot of time saying bodies come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and talk about food being fuel and sometimes we need fuel that makes our bodies grow strong and make our bodies feel good and sometimes we need fuel that makes our taste buds, and soul feel good. That has been so hard.

My mom never commented on my body, but would make me compare hers and other people's bodies to make herself feel better about her own. "My legs don't look as big as that lady's do they?!", "My arms aren't that big, right?!" Over time as I grew up and my body changed, I wondered if she had that internal monologue while looking at me.

My older sister had an ed. This affect ed me so bad. I remember one time when my grandma weighed me after my sister and i was not allowed to tell my sister (who is 12 years older than me) that i weighed more than her

one time, my family was visiting yellowstone, and i was wearing shorts and a crop top. my dad made a comment under his breath to my mom, which i didn’t hear, but my sister did. she gasped, and said “you can’t say that!” and me, being curious, said “what did he say?” my dad wouldn’t let them tell me, until we went to the bathroom 10 minutes later. my sister told me that he compared me to the pillsbury dough boy. not a day goes by that i don’t think about that

my parents and family loveeeee to talk about literally everything we eat after dinner and talk about nutrition and calories all the time! i’ve just now started realizing that, thats what probably has contributed to my food struggles

i was always like complimented for not finishing my food (my dad would always say things like "i wish i was like that and could just stop") i always stopped eating early cuz i felt rly sick when i was even a little bit full, and it rly stuck. when i got older and was dancing 4+ hours a day they were all shocked i could suddenly finish a meal, so i stopped eating the whole thing

I got ban from eating ice cream during quarantine because my mom felt I looked out of shape

At the time, my 4 year old niece would talk about how my 2 year old niece loved carbs and they needed to watch out for what she ate. “Healthy” food was always the discussion and priority. FYI - carbs weren’t healthy, ice cream was only for special times and in moderation, etc 🥺

I definitely blame my mom for mine she made me feel guilty for ever eating and then when I lost a ton of weight said I got bigger.

My mom taught me to wake up and eat a bunch of desserts in the dark. We’d do it together and laugh 😅 now that I’m a mom I’m like ohhh that wasn’t good to develop

I fear as a GenX this is how we were raised. Everyone from our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, parent’s friends, neighbors etc would comment on everyone’s weight. I’m trying really hard to be better but I know I fail a lot especially when it comes to commenting on myself

Growing up me and my older sister were always naturally skinny and when I was really young I wanted to gain weight but then as I got older my mum and sister used to say things like “you’re a lot bigger than your sister when she was your age” and I know they meant it in a nice way because they thought that’s what I wanted, but idk it just switched something in me and I started wanted to lose weight and be smaller than her and even now I’m 18 she’s 25, she’s gained weight and is happy with her body and I’m still underweight (on purpose lol) but I still think I’m bigger than her and I always feel super competitive with her if she’s not eating or I’m eating more than her :/ I hate it bc she’s not even disordered at all and she’s not doing anything malicious

I was always a stick growing up (just my body type) the second I started gaining weight when I became a literal woman my dad said I was pudgy and thought he was being helpful. This was 5 years ago and I still think about it often. Luckily I had learned enough at that point to respond “please don’t comment about my body in positive or negative ways” but I was very hurt

Hi, Mo. You know me. My mom passed away in January friend m Alzheimer’s. Ironically, she ate the best she ever did in Memory Care. I forgave her for how I was raised. You make a lot of sense. Thank you❤️❤️

My mom would starve herself, go on crazy diets, tell us that men don’t like women to be too skinny or too fat, told us that snacking makes you fat and made a comment about my legs that to this day still sticks with me. She also constantly compared my body with my sisters.

My mom would always comment on people’s bodies, including calling people sticks or anorexic which definitely had an influence on me
