Gargoyles on rooftops were originally designed as waterspouts to drain rainwater away from the walls and foundations of buildings. Their extended mouths channel water off the roof, helping to prevent erosion and damage to the masonry. In many medieval churches and cathedrals, gargoyles also served a decorative purpose and were often carved into frightening or fantastical creatures.

You said it, it’s a gargoyle, their literal purpose is to direct the water away from the walls. It very literally gurgles water.

It's a stylized fish, but it's a fish nonetheless.

Guess where the name gargoyle is coming from. 😁 It’s the sound of the water flowing through these old rainwater spouts

our word "gargarejo", as the English word "gargle", comes from an adaptation of the french word for Gargoyles (gargouille).

Most of the time, they depict phantasy creatures, devils, or demons—presumably to ward off evil spells—though sometimes they also depict real animals that the sculptors had apparently never seen in person. And yes, the human imagination is vast. 😂
A story from my old hometown: At the cathedral in Freiburg, there is a gargoyle that points its bare buttocks—with the hole—toward a building. One of the many legends goes that the wealthy people in that building were too stingy with their donations for the cathedral’s construction and were mocked with this figure. That sounds plausible to me🤣🤣. https://onlinesammlung.muensterbauverein-freiburg.de/de/object/%20-%20Wasserspeier-Hinternentblößer/C957591720134A4B9CCA803F5D096F90?slide=3
