Beginning in August 1904, Japanese forces surrounded the heavily fortified Russian naval base at Port Arthur in southern Manchuria. Despite strong Russian defenses, the Japanese gradually captured key positions around the fortress through months of intense fighting and heavy casualties. A turning point came when Japanese troops seized 203 Meter Hill, allowing their artillery to bombard the harbor and destroy much of the Russian Pacific Fleet. With the fortress's defenses collapsing and supplies running low, the Russian commander Anatoly Stessel surrendered Port Arthur on 2 January 1905. The siege ended in a decisive Japanese victory. Japan suffered roughly 30'000–35'000 casualties, while Russia suffered around 31,000 casualties and prisoners.
