in old days in Iran A chicken was a common domestic bird that almost every household owned however A goose was larger, less common, and generally considered more valuable and prestigious. The proverb suggests that people often imagine that what belongs to others is better or more valuable than what they already have—even when there is little or no real difference like you said it yourself, they're the same.
