@pbsamericanmasters: Gloria Steinem on why modern women relate to Marilyn Monroe On February 21, 2006, Gloria Steinem spoke about Marilyn Monroe’s lasting legacy, what she represented to women and men, and how the advent of the women’s movement could have provided her the support she desperately needed. “What the women’s movement has done is to allow women to become each other’s mothers and to support and model and hope and praise and love each other enough so that we can begin to repair the early damage.” Interview conducted by Gail Levin, director of American Masters—Marilyn Monroe: Still Life (2006). #marilynmonroe
Gloria Steinem is a beautiful Woman, and absolutely profound.

There are many beautiful women I admire but the reason why Marilyn has always been important to me since being a child is her sensitivity. I could always relate to her in the sense that I never really fit in anywhere but always wanted more for myself. From a young woman who grew up in foster homes and had a stutter to an icon who 100 years after her death is still loved 🥰

I had the pleasure of shaking Gloria Steinem’s hand when she spoke at Oberlin. With tears in my eyes I could barely speak; filled with respect and gratitude and honor to be able to see her in person. You have changed the world in more ways than you will ever know. Thank you

I am 76 yo, and the feminist movement saved my life. I discovered it when I was in college, and am so grateful to all our foremothers.

I always saw her sadness and felt so connected to it. She was performing a character, and behind that character was a depth I wanted to know more about. I wish we could’ve saved her.

I never saw Marilyn that way. I was grateful for someone who wasn't endlessly cheerful and invulnerable. I identified with her suffering and isolation.

The become each other's mothers thing is so real because the way I relate to Marilyn changes as I age. I hope she had safe places for her vulnerability, people she could just be herself with, without the risks of being exploited.
