@rachellynnsebastian: There’s a particular kind of grief that comes from being inside for a very long time. And somehow that grief met the sun this morning. For about ten minutes, I sat in direct sunlight. Ten minutes. It felt like thirty seconds. The closest thing I can compare it to is watching a solar eclipse or a lunar eclipse. That feeling of being completely captivated by something so ordinary and so miraculous at the same time. I’ve always loved sunlight. Riding my motorcycle through mountain roads, feeling the sun flicker through the trees and across my helmet. Warmth on my face. Warmth on my chest. Life touching life. This morning felt like a small piece of that. There is grief here, of course. Grief for all the places I cannot go right now. But there is also something else. We’ve slowly been transforming my room from something that looks like a hospital room into something that feels more like the outdoors. We moved my bed so I can look directly out the window. We’ve been collecting secondhand plants from people who are moving. We’re creating a little ecosystem of life, one leaf at a time. And today, the sun found its way in too. I think what this experience is teaching me is that sometimes what we’re longing for isn’t always as far away as it seems. Sometimes it arrives differently than we imagined. Reflected. Redirected.
