He is a featherweight professional boxer and a core member of the Kamogawa Boxing Gym, alongside Ippo Makunouchi, Mamoru Takamura, Masaru Aoki, and Tatsuya Kimura. Itagaki is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in Japanese. The story follows Itagaki, a prodigy who excelled at every sport he tried, including soccer, but was drawn to boxing to test his individual limits. In high school, he encountered Kyōsuke Imai in the national tournament and suffered three knockout losses, a trauma that drove him to skip college and join the Kamogawa Gym, where his idol Ippo trained. Itagaki is renowned for his exceptional speed and genius-level boxing talent. His most notable ability is a heightened state of spatial perception often described as "Chronos" or "bullet time"—where his reflexes allow him to perceive opponents moving in extreme slow motion, enabling him to dodge punches effortlessly and land devastating counters. His signature technique is the Hedgehog (or Porcupine), a rapid flurry of mid-power punches used to overwhelm opponents. He can also mimic techniques he has observed, similar to Mamoru Takamura. Itagaki is cheerful, charismatic, and fond of bad puns, but his confidence sometimes borders on overconfidence—a flaw that has cost him dearly. He works part-time at the Makunouchi family fishing business. After winning the East Japan Rookie King tournament and defeating his rival Imai, Itagaki became the #1 ranked Japanese featherweight. However, in his title match for the vacant Japanese championship, he entered overconfident and was knocked out in the first round by Imai in a stunning upset.
