One summer when all of the siblings were old enough mom had us plan an entire road trip. Lodging, gas, food, all priced out along the way. We had to call the hotels to get prices, and restaurants to see if they took reservations, so we learned social interactions that weren’t school or church. Then she had a 5 gallon jug that everyone put loose change in. She said once it was full we would use it to go on one of the vacations. It was actually really fun. And we did the vacation a few years later.

When my sisters and I were punished, my dad would make us write several-page handwritten reports taking accountability and researching the consequences of our behavior. Annoying af but effective

I’m a teacher and my son is about to go into fourth grade. He has to read 30 minutes a day and has to do a math facts sheet a day. It usually only takes him 10 minutes not even. As a teacher I say thank you!!!

I am so grateful my parents let us not think about school all summer. But we did well in school so there was no need to push on anything

I made all of my kids do academic work for 1 hour each morning and then we spent the rest of the day at the lake. That gave me time to pack our lunch and snacks in the cooler.

My mom would make up HW “worksheets” of important stuff that schools didn’t really teach thoroughly (cursive, reading analog clocks, addressing envelopes, etc) and I love that she did that. I hated it at the time but am so grateful now. She did the book reports sometimes but it wasn’t consistent like the other stuff

I did it similarly where I didn’t care what they read as long as they were reading. Newspaper, comic book, back of the cereal box. Read it and tell me about it. 😂

Growing up, my mom would always have my siblings and I read for 30 minutes, exercise for 30 minutes, and make sure our room was picked up before we could get on electronics. I hated it as a kid but looking back, I am grateful that she did that.

When I was in middle school in the summer, my step mom at the time, would give me 10 words a week. I’d have to look them up in the dictionary and hand write all the definitions for all 10 words. I hated it so much as a kid but now as an adult I appreciate it because it gave me a much larger vocabulary. I plan to make my kids do the same lol

Our local library had a challenge for kids to see how many books they could read on the summer break. My kids used to love it!

I am a middle school math teacher and i cannot express how much you helped your children with their lifelong math skills by having them practice all year! math is a buildup subject and i guarantee you helped them SO MUCH by creating automaticity with basic math skills!!!
