I wanted to be told that it was possible to transform my heart, that dirty rags could be exchanged, not that some stains were too tough to clean. I write stories that fit into her world. Her life is messy & full of secrets. The world around her crawls with monsters masquerading as angels, & she can’t discern the difference until it’s too late. Innocence is a privilege, a sheltered protection, & the world has long broken through the stronghold. She looks for stories that teach her to survive the darkness, that prove she isn’t alone, that give her hope that she can be loved regardless of how damaged others claim she is. There are plenty of voices telling her she isn’t good enough, righteous enough, modest enough, clean enough, perfect enough. I pray my books tell her “you don’t have to be, because Jesus is.” Jesus has something to say to that girl when she is hurting, struggling, failing, drowning. I am honored to give Him space on my pages to say it. So while my stories aren’t spicy, they are not shy. They do not believe her world is easy. They met her where she is without asking her to pretend.
