Many people view Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's refusal to assume power before Jomo Kenyatta's release as a political mistake. I see it differently.
To me, Jaramogi demonstrated rare statesmanship, selflessness, loyalty, and commitment to justice. At a time when many would have chosen personal ambition, he chose principle over power. He believed that Kenya's struggle for independence was bigger than any individual and that true leadership required fairness and respect for collective sacrifice.
This decision helped shape a culture that many people from the lakeside region proudly identify with today: speaking one's mind, standing for what is believed to be right, valuing fairness, and placing community interests above personal gain. Whether one agrees with his politics or not, Jaramogi left a powerful lesson that leadership is not merely about acquiring power, but about the values one upholds while pursuing it.
His legacy reminds us that integrity, courage, and sacrifice can outlive political office. History may debate the political consequences of his decision, but few can deny the character and conviction it revealed. This version highlights Jaramogi's virtues—statesmanship, fairness, integrity, selflessness, and principle—while avoiding language that could be seen as attacking another community. It will likely resonate more widely and keep the focus on Jaramogi's legacy.
