My issue with it wasn’t even that the backrooms concept is “confusing” honestly it’s the plot outside of the backrooms itself that I didn’t really like. I didn’t enjoy how they just jumped to Clark presumably being in there for a while and has become “crazy” when we see him again. I would have rather seen his progression in getting to that mindset rather than his therapist just finding him like that.

“Backrooms was mid” people are on a 0% media literacy run for sure😮‍💨I remember by the epilogue of the movie going “wow I reallyyyy hope they don’t explain everything because that would really wreck the atmosphere I think” and idk to me it was pretty clear what it was about? It’s literally non-linear storytelling, which makes sense in a movie about an environment that is easy to get lost in. The homogenization of media (especially in film) for profit has really rotted people’s brains over the last couple decades I think, and now that film companies are taking more risks it’s like people can’t comprehend anything that isn’t spoon fed to them😵‍💫The Internet I think plays a huge role here too. The backrooms “canon” has been so publicly accessible for so long now, prompting fan rewrites and fan creations that have surpassed the success of Kane’s initial posts, and I think consumers of purely short-form TikTok content are struggling right now to let go of that control of the narrative form and just let the director take them on a journey.

I think the director did an amazing job as confusing the audience. I honestly think the way the backrooms was portrayed in this movie to be confusing was done on purpose. This including for it to be unsettling to some people. It did a good job portraying how the realm itself messing with your mind along with the idea of the realm itself trying to remember things that it’s not familiar with. I’m not good with words my bad but from a psychological perspective, this is really good horror in a psychological way.

Personally I’m tired of the trauma dump allegories in horror. While the exact philosophy behind why nostalgia brings us so much comfort and pain which is yes relative to backrooms- I think it’s scarier to think you can make one wrong turn someplace so harmless and end up in this endless voided space that doesn’t have any explanation- feels familiar yet uncanny- ahh I hate to say it but I wish they gave us LESS
