@grammys: We spoke with Jimmy Jam hours before Rhythm Nation 1814 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame to get his reflections on the iconic record that changed pop culture forever. Caption written by @TrendyPOP! 90s & 00s Pop Music - Rhythm Nation is the soundtrack of a young Black woman coming into her power. Control had introduced Janet Jackson as an artist with something to say about her own life. Three years later, Rhythm Nation made it clear she had something to say about the world. The album was a manifesto — a vision for a world "rid of color lines" and "no geographic boundaries.” Industrial beats, harder than anything on pop radio, welded to New Jack Swing's swagger, funk's groove, and R&B's melodic core. Janet, Jam & Lewis watched the news, and the album refused to look away. The title track and "State of the World" on systemic racism. "Livin' in a World (They Didn't Make)" on the children inheriting it. "The Knowledge" on illiteracy, prejudice and drug abuse. And then "Miss You Much," "Escapade" and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" reminded us this was still a huge pop record. What Jimmy Jam describes in this clip – the artist who walked in already knowing what she wanted – is the reason the record sounds the way it does. The genius is in the execution. Thirty-five years on, Rhythm Nation, and the vision it took to make it, are still underestimated.
