D&D Beyond has been incredibly helpful as a beginner setting up my character! You can the books digitally there as well. And I LOVE the virtual character sheet and dice rolling!

DnD is actually free, the basic rules are free and for DMs you can find most monster stat blocks there, also you don't HAVE to buy dice if you're using an app like DnD Beyond (which I recommend cuz it's got very clean UI but Roll20 has more stuff it's just way clunkier) you can roll in app, or you can just Google dice roller

I always compare one-shots to a movie (a self contained story) and campaigns to a TV show (multiple connected stories, usually with an ongoing plot).

I picked it up with friends and no one wanted to run the games so I did. It was new for all of us so we just had fun and stumbled through it at first. I spent a lot of time learning everything so everyone could learn at their own pace. We have been playing weekly for 10 years now.

If anyone wants to branch out to other system, Pathfinder 2e is also a really fun option! Everything you need to know from player guides, to DM rules, to bestiaries & items and more can be found in a website called Archive of Nethys :)

Some libraries also carry games and TTRPG books! If you live near a big, better funded library, they may even have rooms with large tables you can reserve and play there!

One group I play with meets monthly in person and we play 8/9 hours. the group I run online every two weeks, bar hiatuses, plays 3 hours per session because we play in the morning 🤣.

Similar question. how does one get started DMing. I'm a little obsessed with character creation to the point that people tell me I should DM and use them as NPCs but I'm fairly new to DND and barely feel like a competent player let alone qualified to dm
