I have two graduate degrees from top ranked schools, consider myself well educated and informed, and decided to abandon the Catholic Church in 2002 in disgust after reading the Boston Globe’s investigation into the coverup and facilitation of child sexual abuse by the Church, but that was the first time I learned about the Epicurean paradox. One more reason to doubt the existence of an omnipotent loving God.

I LOVE THIS!! This reminds me of a time I was teaching an experienced photographer about how to use the video functions on his camera. I had started to go over what I thought, to me as a filmmaker, were some pretty rudimentary foundations of filmmaking. As I shared them, he was surprised at them, and it opened my eyes to the fact that a lot of the things that I assumed were basic knowledge of filmmaking were eye-opening revelations to many of the photographers I was teaching. Even though there is similarity between photography and filmmaking, there were some differences worth noting that photographers just didn't know. At that point, I never went back to assuming any of the audiences I write for or create content for knows everything that I'm talking about. There is always some group of people out there for whom the information will be new and fresh.

You need to watch this video yourself, every day, to keep your own advice close at hand. Perception of self isn’t necessarily accurate. Speaking words that seem correct or desirable about ourselves isn’t the same as it being the truth.

isn't this kind of self-infringing? for example, you've learned a lot of significant correlative patterns to make highly probable inferences about someone and what they know based on a set of criteria. when they say something like "I like that trump fights for the average american," it reveals a significant portion of what they [don't] know. and always accommodating for the lowest common denominator is unproductive. you limit your own knowledge and set a precedent to acknowledge all the outliers. all that to say, "assuming sometimes knowledge" is not a distinction but a spectrum and we all have to do it. so what qualifier makes it okay versus insufferable?
