🔥 “God doesn’t want your ministry. He wants your heart.” – David Wilkerson David Ray Wilkerson (1931–2011) was an American Pentecostal evangelist, pastor and writer whose ministry began far from the glare of New York. Born in Hammond, Indiana, on May 19, 1931, into a family of preachers, he studied at Central Bible College and was ordained with the Assemblies of God in 1952. He then pastored small churches in Pennsylvania. In 1958 a Life magazine story about seven New York teenagers on trial for murder pierced him deeply. He went to the city with little more than a burden, was thrown out of the courtroom he had entered hoping to reach them, yet stayed among the gangs and addicts. Out of that unlikely beginning came Teen Challenge. Wilkerson’s ministry grew, but his message grew sterner rather than softer. He preached repentance, holiness, prayer, the cross and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. The Cross and the Switchblade carried the story around the world. In 1971 he founded World Challenge. In 1987, after walking through the darkness of Times Square and crying to God over what he saw, he founded Times Square Church. In 1994 he founded what became Summit International School of Ministry. Yet the larger the work became, the more he warned against mistaking ministry for intimacy with Christ. A man may labor for God and still neglect God Himself. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” Proverbs 4:23. Wilkerson died in a car crash in Texas on April 27, 2011, aged seventy-nine. The works did not go into the grave with him. Times Square Church still stands in Manhattan. World Challenge continues its global ministry. Summit continues training workers, and Teen Challenge has grown into a worldwide network serving people bound by addiction. Crowds may applaud the ministry while heaven searches the man. God is not impoverished for want of our work. He wants the heart from which the work proceeds. Lose that, and the lamp may still stand while the oil is gone. 🔥 — #DavidWilkerson #Quoted #SpiritBroods #HeartForGod #PrayerAndHoliness
