In 1346, the English army led by Edward III faced a much larger French force commanded by Philip VI of France. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the English used strong defensive positions and the devastating power of the longbow to great effect. Wave after wave of French cavalry charges were cut down before reaching English lines, leading to a catastrophic defeat for France. One of the most famous moments of the battle involved John of Bohemia. Although he was completely blind, he refused to leave the battlefield. According to tradition, he ordered his knights to tie their horses to his and lead him into the fight. Together they charged toward the English lines, where John and his companions were killed.
