@gordondrivingschool: If you’re turning left at an unprotected left turn, don’t creep into the crosswalk to wait. The safest place to wait is behind the crosswalk until you can complete the turn all the way through the intersection. When drivers pull forward into the crosswalk, they put themselves in a worse position as the light changes. Now you’re blocking pedestrians, possibly blocking traffic, and if the light turns red before you clear the intersection, you’ve just completed the turn on a red light. A lot of drivers think pulling forward is “normal,” but normal doesn’t always mean safe or legal. #drivereducation #drivingtips #safedriver
It actually is ok because they have possession of the intersection.

This is wrong… you’re supposed to prepare yourself for the turn. Should it turn red, you are legal to complete the turn because you are only clearing the intersection at that point.

As an officer, your interpretation of the law (at least in CA) regarding this left turn is wrong. You are allowed (and encouraged) to move into the intersection to wait for an opening to turn left. If traffic is continuous and no opening presents, you’re allowed to finish the turn once the light has turned red and opposing traffic has stopped. It’s not considered “running the red” because you’ve already passed the prolongation of the intersecting street and in the intersection. Any vehicles on the intersecting street are required to yield to the turning vehicle until they safely clear the intersection.

You are wrong. If you don’t wait in intersection , you will not be able to make the turn on busy roads, and you will have to accelerate while turning which is not good. Wait in intersection allows you to accelerate while straightening out, which is safer.

You are absolutely wrong. You are supposed to pull into the intersection. Then clear the intersection when clear, even after the red. The law states that if anypart of your vehicle enters the intersection before the light changes red you are "In the intersection" according to the law. Cross traffic has to wait for the intersection to be clear before entering themselves.

No, black car didn’t turn “through” a red. I get that the precise rules vary by state, but most allow you to enter and wait on a green (in this case a yield arrow). The black car entered the intersection LEGALLY, not “through a red.”

If you enter the intersection before the light turns red, you are entitled to exit the intersection even after the light turns red. This being legal saves lives by making it possible to cross extremely busy roads, especially those that lack the chance for a protected left turn. The other option is five bomb an unsafe gap or keep waiting til you get lucky. One of those holds up traffic, the other puts a ton of people at risk. I’d take the slight impairment of the crosswalk over the other 2 options

Arizona prefers the action of the black car. I saw a cop tell a lady to move forward into the intersection at a light one time.

Completely incorrect. At least in my state, it is taught and encouraged as the right way to make a yielding left turn. As long as you pull into the intersection before the light turns red, this is the way. It is ALWAYS the cross traffic responsibility to ensure the intersection is clear before proceeding through when their light turns green. In some places your can be cited for impeding the flow of traffic for failure to do this.

No this is wrong. You should absolutely enter the intersection when making a left and waiting for traffic to clear. If there is no gap you finish the turn when the light changes red.
