it’s illegal for the US (but was legal during the vietnam war) but i think war journalists serve the biggest purpose in conveying what troops and civilians on both sides are going through. their work is invaluable as a giant war history nerd

This is a misconception. They aint immune. That vest is actually there, primarily, to identify for if/when sh!t hits the fan. This is why they have armed military escorts. Press/Nurses can get shot in war.

Short answer, yes, long answer, not really. War journalists are almost never near the front lines, and the ones that do go have similar casualty rates as the soldiers (although a little lower). Besides that, the majority of deaths and injuries in war come from artillery, mortars, and recently drones. This indirect combat style unfortunately doesn’t discriminate between soldiers and civilians. While both sides probably want to treat innocent civilians with peace, it usually doesn’t end up that way.
