The irony of feminism being accused of “hating men” is that so much of what feminists have been shouting about would actually make life better for men too. ❤️ Yes, patriarchy disproportionately harms women and girls, and we see the most devastating consequences of that in male violence against women, femicide and the inequalities women still face, but patriarchy was never particularly kind to men either. Because what do we think happens when generations of boys are taught that vulnerability is weakness, that crying is “girly”, that talking about your feelings isn’t masculine, that asking for help makes you less of a man, and that the only acceptable emotions are confidence, anger or aggression? And I think there’s something even deeper in the way we raise boys to reject anything considered feminine, because when we teach a little boy that being “like a girl” is the worst thing he can be, we’re not only teaching him something about girls, we’re teaching him to police and dislike parts of himself too. Tenderness, sensitivity, affection, vulnerability, fear, sadness… these aren’t feminine traits, they’re HUMAN ones. It’s also all tangled up with homophobia and the incredibly narrow version of masculinity boys are expected to squeeze themselves into, and then we seem surprised when some of those boys grow into men who struggle to express emotion, ask for help or build the kind of emotionally intimate friendships and support networks that women are often encouraged to have. So when I talk about dismantling the patriarchy, I’m not talking about dismantling men. 😂 I’m talking about dismantling a system and a set of expectations that limit all of us. I shout about feminism for my daughter because I want her to grow up knowing she is safe and equal, but I shout about it just as loudly for my son because I want him to grow up knowing that he gets to be a whole human being too. ❤️ #fyp #feminism #malelonelinessepodemic
