I’m an SAT/ACT tutor and I would argue that the SAT is designed in a way to promote problem solving and pattern recognition, not general cultural familiarity.

I 1000% see your point and agree, but also as a non-White middle class person who only used TikTok and khan academy to study for the SAT, I got 1500+ on my first try. I wouldn’t say that my only example discredits your entire point since it’s only one example but I just wanted to share my experience. To add to ur point, I struggle with connections bc the categories are very niche and specific knowledge. Might have to do with age bc I’m not middle aged and a lot of my classmates struggle w the same ones that I do

You can also argue that with YouTube and the free practice sat’s the sat is more accessible than ever. Any student no matter where they live or what school they go to can study for the test on the internet as long as they have a device

I am a psychometrician and addressing these issues in educational assessments is a very well known problem in the field of measurement known as measurement invariance (or differential item functioning). Essentially it asks “how can we know/detect when our items ONLY measure the intended construct (e.g., math ability) and do not function different across different groups (e.g., cultural groups)“. Most modern assessment programs have these methodologies built in so I’d argue the generalist claim that they measure familiarity, access, monetary capital, etc. is not entirely accurate (and if they are, there are ways to address such items/assessments using the methodologies described above).

idk bc when i took the sat i studied only with kahn academy (completely free) and superscored with a 1560. i was also working two jobs at the time so at the end of the day it’s sometimes just comes down to ppl having good time management

it is very wrong to think nyt is testing "common knowledge!" that is a complete misunderstanding! the clues do have a particular niche and canon, thats kind of the thing. it takes ppl years of doing crosswords to pick up on it and see the patterns.

There’s the opposite side of the coin to this too though. Basically by making the act/sat optional, colleges are effectively lowering the bar for entry and have incoming freshman be way underprepared. Problematic both ways

This is a very fair point. You’re absolutely correct that children from certain backgrounds come in with significant accumulated advantages. It’s gotten better over time, and colleges are very thoughtful with how they compare scores, but it’s never going to be truly equitable. Luckily, there have never been more free resources than there are right now for students to try to bridge those gaps! I’m trying to help too 😃

I've also learned this with neurodivergence and other impairments. Just because someone is non-verbal or can't hold a pencil doesn't mean they lack intelligence. ps: has anyone ever told you you look like Rosa Parks?

Served as a proctor for the third grade state reading test. Kids had to color the circle under the picture that matched the sentence. My black and brown working class kiddos could not figure out “Sarah felt under the weather.” That just wasn’t a phrase they heard or used regularly. THIS is what we were talking about re: cultural bias.

Especially english module two sentence completion, it’s not even about which word fits in the context. It’s about knowing what these obscure words mean which I don’t think is a true marker of intelligence

I was thinking this definitely extends to IQ scores, especially when given abroad or to immigrant communities to “compare” the scores from different populations, when its asking “common american knowledge”
