I’ve always loved the idea that werewolves are manifestations of the inner self. Everything that you try to hide about your character gets pushed to the front the second you transform. If you’re honest, content, stress-free, etc then your wolf will be normal-looking and less dangerous, but if you’re dishonest, temperamental, haunted by something, etc then your wolf will appear scary and behave unpredictably. This could also explain why people who are bitten turn into scary werewolves in the movies, because they’re frightened of what they’re turning into, so their form reflects that fear!
