It doesn’t do this by default. If it’s a true PDF…It reads the text. Extracts with python. Rasterises the pages to PNG for layout, chart content etc. it extracts embedded images separately. Else if it’s a scanned pdf (all images) it will run OCR

you can prompt claude to run pdftotext script. it obviously wont get images though and also may miss the context of where text is placed.

you need to ask Claude to run the pdf to image or create a cli to convert it on the fly before reading it.

apparently this is true, Claude does read the raw text direcrly, but because it is not sure if there are other elements, images, graphs etc. it still converts the whole thing to images and reads them again

Man, just ask Claude to covert it to markdown. Then upload the markdown to Claude. Easy.

There's a plug in the Microsoft made that you can install in. Claude, it's called markitdown and it's on GitHub

I find Claude super annoying. When it does what you asked it too, it’s quite good, but too often it won’t do anything. Too busy, no tokens, no reason given at all. I hardly ever bother with it unless I need help programming something. It isn’t even much good inside Office.
