@meghannmcuniff: Jurors in the murder trial over a gas station owner killing a teenager will continue deliberating tonight after the judge declined to allow them to go home. Judge Heath Taylor told attorneys he's concerned the huge amount of media attention over 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton’s fatal shooting in May 2023 could influence jurors if they recess deliberations for the day. He brought the jury in and told them they can't go home. "Typically once the deliberative process begins, we ask you to stay here as long as possible. Certainly, we're not going to do anything inhumane, but I'm going to ask you to keep deliberating," the judge said. A court employee "is going to get with you shortly with regard to orders for dinner, and we're just going to ask you to keep working." "I understand it's been a long day. It's been a long day for everybody, and I know y'all are diligently working, and I appreciate that, but we're going to ask you just to keep working, and we'll get your dinner orders," Judge Taylor said. I do not see this in California, but juries in the South especially regularly deliberate late into the night. I think making jurors stay like this when they want to go home favors the defense, but it's difficult to know for sure. #law #crime #court #jury

The longer a jury takes to come to a conclusion the more likely a hung jury or acquittal

Reasonable doubt. The prosecution failed to prove their case.

Mprosecution argument was weak. it is sad a person lost their life. u see I am not taking sides. this is a pure analysis of the facts in place. the kid was falsely accused. he did not steal anything. the Chows accused him and chased the kid down. the 14 year old had an illegally obtained loaded gun. that is a fact. defense argument was that the 14 year old pointed the gun at them. the prosecution said that he did not. the kid was shot in the back thus suggesting he was running from danger and not trying to shoot the chows. chow father shoot the kid because his son said the kid had a gun. Jury had to choose in either believing in Chows self defense or the unjustified chasing of an innocent scared kid falsely accused of shoplifting. in the end, the 14 year old possesion of the gun was why the jury sided with the Chows: Under South Carolina's self-defense laws, Rick Chow did not have to prove with 100% certainty that the teenager was about to shoot. The defense only had to prove that Chow had a reasonable fear that his son's life was in imminent danger. With no video evidence and even with eyewitness testimony that the 14 year old did not point a gun at them, the issue lies that the kid had an illegally obtained loaded gun with a live round in the chamber. carrying that gun was the reason chow was not convicted. the 14 year old even had Instagram post showing possession of the gun a day prior to the events. it is strictly illegal for a minor to possess a gun under South Carolina law. again I am not taking sides, but it was easy for the Chows to claim self defense when the 14 year old was illegally carrying a gun. there is argument that the neighborhood was an area of high crime so perhaps the 14 year old obtained a gun for self defense but again, the kid cannot have possession of any guns regardless of the reason. this was also a reason the Chows had a gun, they allegedly have been robbed at gun point before so naturally they were always in a state of alertness (defense argument used in court). I bet the prosecution thought the shot in the back and the eyewitness was enough to convince the jury. maybe not in SC but the jury was made of mixture of whites

They have to determine if he intended to shoot and kill Cyrus, that's why it's taking so long.

A 14-year-old child was running away. According to the allegations, he was pursued for a significant distance by an armed adult. The child was not advancing toward anyone. He was not attacking anyone. He was running away. If someone chases a child with a gun, continues the pursuit instead of disengaging, and ultimately shoots that child in the back, people have every right to ask hard questions about intent, judgment, and accountability. Too often, when the victim is a Black child, people suddenly become confused about what is right and wrong. The same facts should be judged by the same standards, regardless of race, status, or background. Justice requires a full and fair investigation. It requires that the evidence be examined honestly and without bias. Communities deserve answers, and families deserve accountability when a life is taken. We cannot claim to value children while remaining silent when children are killed. Every child deserves protection. Every family deserves justice. Every life deserves equal value under the law.
