That’s when “entry” level gear wasn’t total junk.

What about the snare John Feldman was using for early 2000s with the used and story of the year…probably many others

The Powerstroke head is doing the heavy lifting. It eliminates a ton of those harsh overtones you usually get from a steel snare. That's why the Genera HD Dry is so popular as well.

the magic behind the 90's songs is that all their equipment is basic beginner gear. The sound of that snare drum is so iconic 🔥🔥🔥

The way recording is done nowadays. It seems that unique snare drum sounds are a thing of the past. I find all snares sounds the same now

Our first FL album (2002) got canned in a review for having a snare that sounded like..."tapping a pen on a cd cover". The snare in question, a pearl export steel snare. We couldnt even get a "change from down the back of the couch" sound. hahaha 🕺🕺🕺🕺

Late 80's/ early 90's Pearl export drums are very, very good. I don't believe anything has ever punched above its weight as hard before or since.

Couple interesting things about recording snare - the room and acoustics play a massive role in the tone (drumbrella), how you EQ resonant rings is everything, 6+ inch snares give low end fundamental that we end up chasing in EQ boosts and it’s easier to get highs than lows in a record, lastly DO DO DO, DO DO DO DO

you can get a great sound out of an ali express drum kit, but the heads play a huge part and how easy it is to tune quite often is affected by price point.
