Should you take chromium if you live with diabetes? If you’ve had diabetes for a little bit, you’ve probably heard of chromium at some point as a supplement to “help your insulin resistance” and “improve your blood sugar”. There’s even people saying that it may even help your mood (!!) You can find it in foods like broccoli, whole wheat flour, brewers yeast (yum), and traces in other  foods (sometimes it's fortified into cereals as well) but does it actually help your blood sugar as a person with diabetes? Let’s look at that science. First study is a meta-analysis of people with type 2 diabetes, so they took a ton of studies and put them together, and this showed a decrease in A1c, fasting blood sugar, insulin resistance, and insulin levels. So, this shows amazing results. The second study is another meta-analysis of people living with type 2 diabetes. This one only showed improvements in A1c. So as you can see, gigantic sample size, but not consistent results. A third study shows a reduction in oxidative stress which is nice because people with diabetes have higher levels of oxidative stress within their bodies and this can potentially help improve that which can have secondary positive effects on blood sugars. I personally don’t take it and I think the evidence is really inconclusive - especially if you have type 1, it was very difficult to find any information on type 1 diabetes. But, if you and your care team decide it’s a good option doses tend to range between 50-200mcg. Let me know your experience. #typeonediabetes #diabetesawareness #diabeteslife #bloodsugarmanagement #chromium
