Try to use a timer! My son is very impatient but using a timer helps him a lot. They don’t like the unknown it helps his anxiety! Sending lots of love ❤️❤️❤️

hiii!! I’m an RBT and work with so many different kinds of behaviors. I’m super heavy on positive reinforcement!! for example: when you see him having a calm body, immediately give positive reinforcement! it might be super exaggerated at first “good calm body” “good listening” “i love the way you’re using words” that kind of reinforcement with also using a token system works for my kiddos, I would definitely look into that as well everytime he has a good behavior add a token and make sure it’s something he is motivated towards working whether it’s a toy or screen time for 5 minutes and then restart the tokens!

Please engage child safety door locks so he can’t get out on his own!! You usually switch a lock somewhere on each door.

I’m really truly surprised you don’t have him in ABA therapy, it will be wonderfully for him and for you. You can work on issues like this with a BCBA & RBT.

Distraction is the only thing that works for us with my middle autistic son. He does not understand visuals or timers yet. He loves songs and counting. So we sing. Count. Etc to distract from or delay the meltdown. Also we keep our child safety locks on the rear doors because one of mine opens the door. We also use a rider safety vest in the car

Visuals may be helpful along with a timer. He doesn’t understand length of time so the visuals may help him see and understand the waiting process

Every time you go to somewhere with only you and me stay in the car five minutes without going in the place so he can learn that he has to wait sometimes

As a former ABA therapist and aunt to two amazing boys with autism, I found that visual timers, clear expectations, and lots of positive reinforcement can really help with waiting. Start small even a second of successful waiting is a win. Praise him enthusiastically and reward the effort, then gradually build up the time. Every child is different, but consistency and celebrating small successes can go a long way. 🤍
