A plain hamburger from McDonald’s can feel like the perfect safe food. It’s predictable, familiar, and the same every time. Someone with ARFID learns the look, smell, and feel of that hamburger so closely that their body relaxes the moment they open the wrapper. It becomes a food they can trust. But that trust is fragile. If even one time you open the wrapper and it isn’t plain and maybe there’s a pickle, ketchup, onion, or anything unexpected, that moment can imprint itself like a snapshot the brain can’t unsee. The visual of that “wrong” hamburger becomes louder than every previous safe experience. Now Mr. ARFID says that looked different once. It could happen again. This isn’t safe anymore. It doesn’t matter that it used to be safe 100 times. The brain attaches itself to the one moment it felt scared, anxious, overwhelmed, or betrayed by the change. This is why losing a safe food is so easy, while gaining one is so hard. A safe food takes time, repetition, and dozens of calm experiences to trust fully. But losing that trust can happen in a single instant because the brain is wired to protect, not to rationalize. Even a small sensory change, or simply seeing something unexpected, can trigger a complete shutdown. It’s not dramatic. It’s not stubbornness. It’s a nervous system responding instantly to something it interprets as a threat. And once that association forms, that once plain hamburger might not be plain, the entire food no longer feels predictable. The visual memory becomes stronger than logic, and the brain now pairs that food with discomfort. One thing I’ve learned is to always check the food first so that we can avoid situations like this as much as possible. *** this is a skit, and something we thought would be helpful for others to see how quickly a safe food can be lost. Thankfully Hannah had made so much progress, but this has happened in the past. #fyp #mcdonalds
