I personally don't give my phone number out to people I've never met in person for safety reasons. I'd rather meet somebody in person first and then maybe give them my number. But it's mostly because there's so many other ways to communicate with people that might not even require a phone number. Cuz a lot of messaging apps will do voice chats these days as well.
