Sunday December 18 2022 will always be remembered as the night football witnessed one of its greatest endings. The Lusail Stadium in Qatar was filled with more than eighty thousand fans and millions around the world were watching every second. Kickoff was at exactly 6:00 PM Qatar time. For over two hours the match felt like a battle that refused to end. Argentina came close to glory more than once but France kept pulling the game back. It was as if destiny wanted to test Lionel Messi one last time. When the final penalty was scored at around 8:57 PM Qatar time Argentina officially became world champions. The players collapsed onto the grass. Some cried. Some stood frozen. Messi did not celebrate wildly at first. He simply looked around the stadium as if he was trying to believe that the dream he had chased for almost two decades had finally become real. A few minutes later the lights grew brighter and the entire world focused on one man. At approximately 9:23 PM Qatar time Lionel Messi walked onto the podium inside Lusail Stadium. Before receiving the trophy he was dressed in a black Bisht by the Emir of Qatar. Then FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed him the FIFA World Cup trophy. Messi raised it above his head and in that exact moment the stadium exploded with noise. Fireworks filled the sky gold confetti covered the pitch and every painful memory from his career disappeared in a single second. It was not just the moment Argentina became champions. It was the ending of a story that had started with an 18 year old boy sent off two minutes into his international debut. Seventeen years later that same boy stood in the middle of the world holding the one trophy everyone said he needed. It felt less like football and more like the final scene of a movie that had taken a lifetime to finish. #messi #wolrdcup
