it always makes me SO distraught when Stratt says the whole "you don't even have a dog" part. Showing the expectation/implication that a human can only be successful or having a worthy life if they have the expectations: a partner, a house, a pet. But I love (and the book shows more of this) the juxtaposition of the fact that despite being "unsuccessful", Grace IS happy with his life. He wants to live BECAUSE HE LIKES HIS LIFE. He wants to see those kids grow up, the book even states that he views them as his own kids in his eyes. He was happy, even when everyone else viewed him with pity for it.

I am aroace and atheist and I've been told so many times that life like this is meaningless and moralless, that the only happiness is to have children and partner or, at least, a dedication to the faith.
