And the abuse for some kind of temporary obstacle. You believe the real them is the loving version. The one who's gentle, attentive, present. So you spend months, years, maybe even decades trying to remove whatever is blocking access to that person. "If I love them enough." "If I'm patient enough." "If I explain it better." "If I help them heal." "Then that loving version of them, the real version of them, will stick around." But here's the thing... The problem isn't that they're hurting and therefore can't love you. The problem is that they have a fundamentally unhealthy way of relating to other people. And those are two VERY different things.
