I get this all the time. I used to be a court reporter and did mostly med mal, my husband is an internist, my daughter in law is an anesthesiologist and so is her husband and ex-husband. They always make a comment about, why are you using medical terms, how do you know these things (whatever we are discussing). Makes me feel like the dr thinks he's the only one who should know anything about my condition. I've been living with this condition for 30 plus years. I think I should know a little.

Sadly I’ve already had to learn over the past 20+ years because of my medical issues. SMDH! I teach others for free because I’ve already done the research

Ugh I have to see a new rheumatologist and I have to put together of binder so they see everything that I have been through and all my symptoms and so on so that I don’t miss anything and they can physically see it all

I was asked if I googled my symptoms. I said what? The doctor thought I googled my symptoms.

I always go in with written questions and have even been known to email them ahead of time. I know I know. I have CRPS and no dr that specializes in this. If that makes sense.

I hesitate to tell anyone that I’m a retired nurse because sometimes I find they treat you differently and not in a good way! I appreciate the ones that respect my knowledge and are happy to answer all of my questions.

That's me. I have a timeline with updates. I have a list of questions. I have suggestions. I ask questions. Being your own advocate is time consuming, tiring, and with most health care providers.... very unpopular. 📄📄🥼😕🫤

I am pharmacy and chronically ill. I wrote out my meds for a dentist and they told me it was so “cute” I could pronounce them all. Like. It’s my job.

Yesterday, l let my husband go in without me. l feel like it's good to do that. So he can speak with his Dr privately. l sent him in with a small list to discuss. Ask for his Buspirone refill. He forgot! 😳 l just called when we got home. if you aren't able to advocate for yourself, it's ok to take someone.

Exactly. Nobody who is sick is going to communicate or advocate their absolute best, it should be on the provider to show competence in asking questions.

Nurse here with chronic pain. It’s an unending cycle of them thinking you are asking for too much.. but it’s just basic care I’m asking for.. this same one I provide for my patients

I can relate I’m not patient as well. I come in with my notes my question list my pen online portal follow up questions research and at the end of the day I know what I’m talking about and it’s just frustrating to see how many healthcare providers have no clue about what they’re trying to pass off to patients just to move them along in the system
