Journalists covering the proceedings reported on June 5, 2026, that out of the initial six teenage classmates and witnesses who took the stand, four of them are Black, and all four gave testimony that challenged Anthony's claim of self-defense. The Black student witnesses consistently testified that Karmelo Anthony was asked over ten times by multiple people to leave the Memorial High School team tent. They stated that Anthony instead tried to goad and provoke the victim, Austin Metcalf, into a fight. The Stabbing Motion: The witnesses described Anthony pulling out the pocketknife in a simultaneous motion just as Metcalf moved to push him out of the tent, stating "it was all the same motion" and that Anthony acted too quickly for Metcalf to actually grab hold of him. Aggression and Intent: When questioned by prosecutors, the student witnesses uniformly stated that they did not view the stabbing as an act of self-defense, did not believe Metcalf wanted to fight, and identified Anthony as the sole aggressor.
