This is hard to watch bc as I understand it the solvent that dissolves the varnish also dissolves the paint so you need exactly the right amount of solvent applied for just the right amount of time with just the right amount of wiping so that you don’t fuck up the paint underneath. I imagine you’re inevitably going to scuff up the painting somewhat and just have to be good enough to minimize it

When I tried to clean the family heirloom painting with soap and a sponge, lots of paint came off. I knew immediately that the previous conservator messed with it. I wasn't, I am sure of it.
