Yes, I also visited Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka as part of my first trip, but some of my most memorable experiences were in places that many people usually overlook. 1️⃣ Beppu - known as the Onsen Capital of Japan, this city in the country’s southernmost island is easy to reach and a truly unique place fuelled by the steam of the hot springs. Besides bathing, visiting the Seven Hells, and cooking your own steamed meal, Beppu is also a great base for exploring other places in Kyushu, such as Yufuin and Fukuoka. 2️⃣ Koya-san - Mount Koya is one of Japan’s most sacred Buddhist sites, and Oku-no-in Cemetery is easily one of the most magical places I’ve had the privilege of visiting. The most unique experience you can do here is staying overnight at one of the Buddhist temple lodgings run by monks! 3️⃣ Shibu Onsen - the history of this small hot spring town dates back some 1,300 years, and it is well-known for its 9 public baths with healing properties. The best way to visit is by staying overnight at one of the town’s historical ryokans, as only overnight guests here can get access to the baths! To be perfectly honest, deciding where to visit and doing all the research ahead of my Japan trip was VERY overwhelming. To maximise your travel plans and save you a lot of stress, make sure to plan and book it with an ABTA travel company for their help and expertise! ABTA member travel companies have many years of experience in the travel industry, and they abide by a Code of Conduct, so they follow high standards. They may unlock special deals and availability, and tailor your trip to your own taste - so that you can explore beyond the beaten path!
