I completely agree — she may have wanted the dog but not been able to keep him for whatever reason, but there is also a chance that she wants him very much and is a position to keep him now regardless of what happened between her and your friend.

Yes. Call the ex! I had an ex that wouldn’t give me my cat back. I happened to find out that the ex moved in with another girl and left my cat with his parents and was able to get her back. I was so happy.

I think that your advice was spot on. The only thing that I would add is if the OP’s wife had concerns about any of the dogs behavior to get a trainer if he keeps the dog to address those behavior issues
