unironically it's a sociological effect. The average person does not think of themselves as average. By using the term normal it makes the player feel like they aren't good at the game and are therefore average or normal. Challenging gives an implication that this mode will be a challenge and makes the player feel like they are overcoming a challenge and are above average.

elden ring started the wave of pretentious gamers. because apparently if you dont make the game as hard as possible for no reason you just suck. and it shows with the mentality of gamers now. so they reword it often.

I prefer it when they just say something like "this is the way the game was intended to be played" because that's what I'm pretty much always gonna do the first go around.

Believe it or not there is a small group of ppl on the internet who need to switch to easy which is valid, but for some reason they’re the tiniest bit offended by it? Like they view it as them being less than other gamers since it labled “easy”😭

The same reason there’s yellow paint in most games. They have a better understanding of what casual gamers need/want than us (obviously this isn’t the case 100% of the time but a lot of these things are intentional).
