@unvoles: The $1 Billion The Seven-Star Icon: Dubai’s Burj Al Arab. Completed in 1999, the 321-meter Burj Al Arab is a modernist engineering masterpiece designed by architect Tom Wright, who based its iconic design on the billowing spinnaker sail of a traditional Arabian dhow ship. To make the structure appear as if it is floating on the water, engineers spent two years reclaiming a man-made island, anchoring it to the seabed using 250 concrete pillars driven 45 meters deep into the sand. The hotel hides incredible popular secrets: its interiors are lavishly decorated with nearly 1,790 square meters of 24-karat gold leaf, it features the world's tallest 180-meter atrium surrounded by dancing water fountains, and its famous suspended helipad 212 meters in the air has been used as a tennis court and a racing track.
