Completed in 1999, the 321-meter Burj Al Arab is a modernist engineering masterpiece designed by architect Tom Wright, who based its iconic design on the billowing spinnaker sail of a traditional Arabian dhow ship. To make the structure appear as if it is floating on the water, engineers spent two years reclaiming a man-made island, anchoring it to the seabed using 250 concrete pillars driven 45 meters deep into the sand.
