I never pay my hospital bill, what they get from insurance is more than enough!

It’s funny you said that. My mom was in the hospital for three weeks and in the icu for 10 of those days and she didn’t get a paper bill. I asked her to ask the hospital for a paper bill and they said it’s online. I thought that was weird but my mom didn’t wanted to fight them so now she is doing payments because as you all know insurance cover a small portion ☹️

We asked for an itemized bill once for $6,000 and found out they charged us for medication we weren’t given. The entire bill was canceled!

I asked for an itemized bill after my surgery but have no idea how to read it. It’s almost 3 pages of acronyms, abbreviations and word labels. And how can you prove whether they used half the supplies they said they used. It’s frustrating!

I once asked if I pay now , what reduction can I get . They told me they do not negotiate the bill. So I have been slow paying them $25 a month now for a couple years already and it will take another 5 or more years to pay them at this rate.

I've done medical billing for over 30 years and even tho you have insurance, you can still get a prompt pay discount.
You can ask for a payment plan (not with a prompt pay request)so that your account doesn't go to a collection agency.

I did NOT think this was gonna work at our local, very expensive (private) hospital. The prompt pay discount worked. Only 10% but better than nothing. Thank you!

Charity care saved me while I was in college. No insurance, got sick. School nurse had me rush to the hospital. Spent 10hrs in the ER $4200 dollar bill in 2005. Paid 300 plus 100 a month for 12 months. Charity care covered the rest.

I had a natural childbirth, and when I asked for an itemized bill, they had a huge charge for the anesthesiologist on it. They removed the charge, but I’m glad I got that itemized bill.

Absolutely do NOT pay immediately if you have insurance!! You may have met your deductible or maximum out of pocket, and you don't owe the full amount. Your insurance company has negotiated prices that will drastically reduce your bill. If you have already called and paid the hospital, it will be extremely difficult to get your money back.

Ask for itemized bill after my mother passed away, showed her receiving medicine days AFTER she passed away. Explain that!

Hi Tyler,
I really enjoy your videos! I was wondering if you have done any on the donut hole issue for health insurance. I'm 61 retired and can't believe how much health insurance has gone up. So much for the portal helping us. Fortunately, I can handle these increases but would change for lower insurance cost if I could save there. Any thoughts?

The prompt pay discount alone has saved me, quite literally, thousands over the past few decades. It never hurts to simply ask.

I requested an itemized bill, found lots of mistakes, could prove those mistakes, and called the insurance company. They did not care. The said it happens all the time and did nothing.

This only works if you don’t have insurance. If you have insurance they won’t negotiate anything with you because they already negotiated with your insurance company on an agreed price.
