1. Tipping is not mandatory. 2. Paying your employees is mandatory by law . Channel your anger to the right place.

if you go out to eat in the US then you accept the social contract to tip your server. it's just part of how restaurants work here.

it’s fine if you don’t want to tip- you just let your server know when you are sat

Exactly and how many servers will stay once they’re hourly? Who’d want to work insane weekends when you can make the same on a Tuesday? And what will they say when their $16 chicken strips are $30 to cover the hourly wages? Let alone the service quality base on hoping for the best tip! It’s like come on guys how do we not see that 😩

i tip, but not based on the price of the food. if i get a steak, and my friend gets chicken tenders, thats one plate each. why am i paying the server a bigger tip for my steak, when its the same amount of work as a plate of cheaper food? thats the part that i dont get. probably started by restaurant owners to incentivise upselling the more expensive food. tipping would be more of a healthy practice if it was more based on plates than price, exhibit: endless food specials.

Actually, if noone is tipping its not possible to have a living wage as a server. And the restaurants would not have any servers and have to file for bankruptcy, or they will have to pay the servers a proper salary.
