*verse to verse deep meaning*
Ephesians 1:1–2 (NIV)
"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Paul begins by stating his role as an apostle, but he is careful to say that this position comes from God's will, not from his own ambition. He writes to "God's holy people" – people who are set apart for God's purposes. In the Old Testament, Israel was called holy because God chose them. Now, everyone who is "in Christ Jesus" shares that same status. The greeting "grace and peace" combines a common Greek greeting and a common Jewish blessing. By putting them together, Paul shows that the gospel brings together people from different backgrounds. For a modern believer, this means your identity is not based on your performance. You are holy because God says you are. Before you rush into your day, pause and offer grace and peace to the people around you, just as Paul offered it to the Ephesians.
Ephesians 1:3–6 (NIV)
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves."
Paul now breaks into a song of praise. He blesses God who has already blessed believers with every spiritual blessing. The phrase "in the heavenly realms" does not mean a distant place in the sky. It refers to the invisible spiritual dimension where Christ rules right now. Paul says that God chose us "before the creation of the world." This means that salvation was not an emergency plan after Adam sinned. It was God's eternal purpose. The goal of this choosing is not just private salvation but that we become "holy and blameless" people of good character. In Roman culture, a father would choose a child to be his heir. Paul uses this picture to say that God has chosen us as His heirs.
