The Playboy founder considered the sign "Hollywood's Eiffel Tower" and stepped in twice when it was threatened.The 1978 RestorationIn the late 1970s, the original 1923 landmark had severely deteriorated and was on the verge of collapsing. Hefner hosted a star-studded gala at the Playboy Mansion, holding an auction where celebrities and businesses "adopted" letters for roughly \(\$27,700\) each to fund a complete rebuild. Hefner personally purchased the letter "Y".The 2010 Land RescueIn 2010, the 138-acre ridgeline directly behind the sign was purchased by developers who planned to build luxury mansions. To prevent this, the Trust for Public Land launched a massive \(\$12.5\) million campaign to buy the land and turn it into a public park. At the final hour, Hefner donated the last \(\$900,000\) needed to close the funding gap, successfully preserving the surrounding landscape.The Hugh Hefner OverlookBecause of his crucial preservation efforts, the Trust for Public Land established the Hugh Hefner Overlook, a hiking spot situated right behind the towering letters that offers panoramic views of the Los Angeles basin.

When I’m driving around town and catch a sight of the Hollywood sign I always feel so happy and grateful to have grown up in a place where some people only DREAM of coming to. It serves as a nice reminder!

What people forget is that the history of Hollywood is the history of 20th century America. So much has been needlessly lost. We need to protect what remains. Thanks for what you do to preserve this Brandon.
