In the spring of 1878, when the school was preparing for its first graduating class, a student committee was appointed to choose official colors for the university. Their first choice was orange and black. However, they quickly discovered that Princeton University had already claimed that specific color combination. Because they couldn't share colors, the committee revised their choice and selected the iconic Scarlet and Gray because they liked how the colors looked together and no other college was using them.
