this is good for a general advice, that being said, I just wanted to remind my fellow artist that it is, sadly, more complicated than this.
light and shadows are determined by the Colour's of the light source, and the colour's of reflected light in the environment. using warm light and cold shadows generally works because it's the same as the light of the sun and the light of the sky.
but imagine a blue sphere in a white room with 1 red light source, to our eyes the object will look black since it absorbs all the red light

ok ngl, I struggle with rendering because color theory is something I don't understand. but this oversimplification does help understanding the concept. an example I can see is if using red, go to orange and tone it down to a dark color. and go pink for a highlight.
