I appreciate some will dismiss this as "just banter" or "just football", but that misses the point. Football is more than a game for many young supporters. Their club represents dreams, heroes, identity and belonging. Before a big match, children invest huge emotion and excitement. It becomes the highlight of their week. That is why I found the continued mocking of Arsenal supporters disappointing. A joke or two after a defeat is one thing; repeatedly doing it on a public platform is another. Those involved knew many young fans would be watching. With that reach comes responsibility. What concerns me most is the lack of awareness of the influence broadcasters and media personalities have. When people with a public platform repeatedly ridicule a club and its supporters, they create hostility rather than healthy rivalry. Football already struggles with abuse and aggression. Those in the spotlight should promote respect, not division. I am not suggesting football should be sanitised or that rival fans cannot have a laugh. Banter has always been part of the game. However, many young supporters experience football differently today, and public figures should be mindful of the impact their words can have. What disappointed me most was not the criticism of Arsenal, but continuing long after it stopped being good-natured humour. It came across as contempt for supporters who invest their time, money and passion into the sport. They are the people who keep football alive. Anyone with a platform should remember that thousands of children may be listening. Rivalry is part of football; disrespect should not be. I believe those involved should reflect on the example they are setting and whether their behaviour reflects the values football should promote.
