See, I'm an old school thrash fan, and I can sing *exactly* like James Hetfield (Puppets/Justice/Black album era sound). Not just close, but exactly. I'm not saying that to be cool, I just practiced to do that for years cause i was such a huge fan. It doesn't hurt, no strain.
I did this because I looked at it as singing a character, and that's easy. I've always thought people would judge any real voice I used and I would never sing again...so I mimicked James Hetfield and people liked it. I can do a damn good Johnathan Davis, too. Again, that's playing a character. Mimicry is easy.
The problem, now, is that I don't know if I even have a voice of my own. 35 years singing one way has definitely left its mark.
The way I hold my jaw, move my lips, push the air through my mouth and throat, compress my vocal cords...it all seems set in stone, now. Is it possible to fix that?
