I usually watch movies for interesting character development, I just didn’t find any of the characters or their arcs particularly interesting

begging for patience? You guys just don't watch movies do you? It wasn't even really drawn out, it has a pretty normal tempo, nothing here was abnormally long. I feel like I'm going insane

The backrooms in itself is the character. Arguably the main character is the backrooms

Not really it just doesn’t match what the backrooms really is

As someone who followed the YouTube series for years, I never expected a story with complete character arcs. The youtube series show 3 seperate characters who all no clip into the backrooms. You know almost nothing about them because what makes the story IS the backrooms, not their personal journeys. The ending of their stories are left open ended too. They are just a vessel to experience the space through. I love a film that lets you sit with the feeling and theorise! But i can definitely see your point especially if you went in with different expectations.

This is a pretty solid take. No catharsis. And I love it.

I loved the movie but I do wonder how I would feel if I wasn’t aware of the online phenomena of capturing and dating mages of liminal space. The movie represents the feeling of the liminal so well- the memories we attach to places we’ve never been to and how our memories are effected by time and our own feelings when the physical places we’ve experienced them is gone. I think the people who don’t like the movie either are not aware of the online community surrounding the idea of the Backrooms or don’t vibe with the idea in general.

The point is u aint supposed to understand it, the Backrooms have no beginning or ending, theres no conclusion in the backrooms, ppl just dont understand that so they think its bad

I don’t think this is SUPPSOED to be a character or even narrative driven story, the ENVIORMENT is the carry. You are supposed to be immersed , meaning yes you’re uncomfy and uneasy..

The lack of narrative payoff is exactly the way a film like Backrooms should end.

my problem is that it's not anything. I was hoping for something where the place was the main character, like Kane's previous project "The Oldest View", but instead it was almost character driven but the characters were paper thin. I don't know, it wasn't Kane's best work.

The movie gives enough to remain coherent, but leaves enough unresolved that it lingers in the mind afterward. the Backrooms externalize those worlds in a way that makes the psychological drama physical. The film maps extremely well onto psychological themes. Because of that, viewers with some psychological background may see a much clearer structure beneath the surrealism. Without that framework, it might feel confusing or underexplained, but the ambiguity is part of the design, even if you do. The movie is not withholding meaning so much as revealing it gradually. It also feels written with a careful ending: complete enough to stand on its own, but open enough to allow the story to continue if there is a sequel. That works well for a film like this, because it does not resolve the disorientation. It does, but yet it doesn't matter by that time lol. It asks the viewer to sit inside the same ambiguity its characters are trapped in throughout the film.

I just feel like the movie felt kind of incomplete and maybe they should’ve showed more of the back rooms cause I feel like we got less of that too

I found the opposite to be true for me, I felt that the way the characters’ arcs wrapped up was too definitive for this type of movie

i enjoyed it. the weakest parts where when the narrative aimed for rationality, when really it was the kooky dream logic that kept me intrigued
